What are Frontier Statistics

Frontier Statistics are innovative statistics which, although in the testing phase, provide meaningful insights for users’ needs. These statistics are presented in a visual, concise and accessible way for public audiences, and are updated on a frequent basis. New topics will be introduced in phases.

Although Frontier Statistics have some degree of uncertainty and are very much in the developmental phase, they aim to advance new methods and techniques to improve statistics, answer key economic questions, fill knowledge gaps, and complement our other data products, including the officially published Central Bank Statistics on our website.

Each product under Frontier Statistics will be subject to a review every two years to assess their relevance and potential future development. We also welcome feedback on these statistics.

New Methods and Datasets

Frontier Statistics may use new data sources and experimental compilation methods, which are not fully developed. Therefore they are subject to evaluation and revision over time. Frontier Statistics may also involve the combination of sources with differing methodological bases, or the use of data where full population coverage cannot be achieved.

Frontier Statistics’ degree of maturity and the quality of the results differ from those of official statistics, especially regarding harmonisation, coverage and methodology. Nonetheless, the products offered under Frontier Statistics provide new and insightful ways to interpret the financial landscape. The compilation of experimental statistics is also carried out by other European institutions such as the ECB and Eurostat.

Frontier Statistics are clearly marked to make them easily identifiable on the Central Bank website. These statistics are published with explanatory notes, detailing the limitations and methodology of the releases. These notes give context to the reliability, stability and data quality of all Frontier Statistics.

All of our Frontier Statistics are updated on a frequent basis.
