 Central Bank Award winners at Young Economist of the Year 2022

We are pleased to announce that this year’s Central Bank Award in the Young Economist of the Year Competition goes to Grace Keaveney from Dublin. The Loreto College, St Stephen’s Green student was honoured for her project titled “Is the Fair Deal Scheme actually fair?”

Tom Knoblauch of St. Brendan’s College, Killarney received a highly commended award for his project titled “Using economics to help ensure we map our way to the right sustainable world.  This project was an analysis of the Irish economy’s approach to energy supply and how this may affect cost of living standards in the future as set out in a modelling framework.

Their achievements were recognised at the Young Economist of the Year awards ceremony at O’Reilly hall in UCD, with Director of Economics, Mark Cassidy presenting the awards. 

The Central Bank of Ireland Award at the Young Economist of the Year aims to discover and highlight the talent of emerging economists in Ireland, with a focus on the Irish economy and monetary policy. The entries by second-level students are reviewed by a judging panel made up of Central Bank economists.

Congratulations to all of our winners. We received a diverse range of entries and were very impressed by the high quality of submissions. A huge thanks to all who entered.

Awards ceremony

The awards were held in O’Reilly Hall in UCD on April 28.

Entry criteria

  • The overall YEOTY competition is open to all national secondary schools
  • All submissions must reference at least one of the Global Goals for Sustainable Development listed below.
  • To be considered for the Central Bank Award students must be over 16 years of age and the submission should have particular relevance to the work of the Central Bank of Ireland. To find out more about our work view our animated explainer series.

Submission

This year's competition is now closed.

Judging

The Central Bank is independently responsible for selecting the winner of the Central Bank Award in the Young Economist of the Year competition, without undue influence and in line with the competition guidelines.

Submissions are first assessed by the YEOTY judging panel who will then provide relevant submissions to the Central Bank's judging panel made up of economists from the Economics and the Statistics Directorate.

Prizes

The winner of the Central Bank Award receives a specially-designed medal and a bursary of €500.
